10 years of Npay: Putting users before numbers

On June 25, 2015, Npay was introduced to the world. Over the past decade, it has grown into a payment service that is most frequently used in users’ everyday lives, seamlessly connecting spending with finance. As we celebrate 10 years of Npay, we look back on the journey we’ve taken and the philosophy that has driven us throughout.
Until the day no one has to ask, “Do you take Npay here?”
Npay is now a payment service deeply embedded in our daily lives, used by 85% of Koreans in their 20s to 60s. It is also a comprehensive financial platform that offers a wide range of financial services, from payments to investments. However, Npay did not start out as a financial service. It was originally developed to provide a convenient shopping experience where users could search for products, compare prices, and make payments in one flow within NAVER. Although a latecomer to the online payment market, we kept asking ourselves, “What more could we do to make the experience more convenient for users?” This led us to build a payment environment that users could trust and provides a rewarding system where every payment comes with points and benefits. These efforts ultimately fueled our rapid growth.
After achieving success in the online payment market, we turned our attention to offline transactions. A significant number of payments were still made offline, and connecting online and offline environments was essential to providing users with a seamless payment experience anytime and anywhere. For this reason, Npay entered the offline payment market in 2021. Driven by a vision of a world where no one has to ask “Do you take Npay?”, we worked tirelessly and became the number one player in the offline payment market within just four years. Now, building on that momentum, we are continuously expanding our global merchant network so that users can enjoy simple QR payments both at home and abroad.
“When it comes to payment services, usability really depends on where they can be used. Even the most advanced payment service won’t be useful if there aren’t many places that take it. Under the motto ‘Usability comes from availability,’ we have strived to expand our network and will continue to do so.”
Lee Hyang-cheol, Executive Director of Pay Services
Our sincere commitment to business owners,
the backbone of the financial ecosystem
Npay has constantly strived to find better ways to support business owners, another key player in the financial ecosystem. This effort led to the creation of our Fast Settlement service, which offers the fastest payout speed in global e-commerce. For business owners, settlement is the starting point for securing inventory, paying suppliers, covering wages, and handling rent, all of which are necessary for running a business. So, to help streamline business operations, Npay ensures that business owners receive 100% of their payment the day after shipping begins. With Fast Settlement, business owners can manage inventory more steadily and ship faster, while customers enjoy stress-free shopping. This ultimately paves the way for a healthier financial ecosystem that benefits everyone.
Within this payment ecosystem, business owners are partners who grow hand in hand with Npay. In addition to Fast Settlement, we provide government grant notifications, tailored loans, insurance products, marketing insights, and more to help them boost their sales and business. Perhaps because of this genuine commitment to business owners, payments made at partnered stores outside of the NAVER platform have surged recently. This shows that Npay is being actively used even beyond the NAVER ecosystem. Going forward, we will continue building more connections to make payments easier for users and create new sales opportunities for business owners.
Unlocking new financial opportunities with data and technology
NAVER holds vast amounts of data from users and business owners. Leveraging this data, NAVER addresses their pain points and paves the way for growth.
For business owners, we gather data-driven business insights, develop practical growth solutions, and share them through MyBiz. For users, we design Npay services in a way that allows them to easily track their spending patterns and discover personalized financial information. In addition, from immersive real estate VR tour that allows you to explore apartment complexes and properties without an in-person visit, to a blockchain-based wallet linked to NAVER ID for simpler and safer digital asset management, and biometric payment that lets you pay with just a fingerprint or Face ID — Npay is constantly integrating various new technologies into its services to make payments easier and more seamless for users.
“We can’t take on every new technology, but when it comes to finance-related technology, we’re always ready to give it a shot. Harnessing NAVER’s non-financial data to create synergies requires advanced capabilities. That’s why we are strengthening data collaboration across Team NAVER and working closely with external partners to unlock new opportunities together.”
Lee Seung-bae, CTO of NAVER Financial
Over the past 10 years, Npay has evolved into a convenient and useful financial platform, maintaining a steadfast focus on its users. Building on the trust we’ve built with our users over the past decade, we will continue to create diverse benefits and meaningful connections by delivering solid technology and seamless services ●
