A closer look at the moment of the day: NAVER’s special logo

When logging on to the NAVER main page, have you ever been greeted by a special logo with welcoming illustrations instead of the basic NAVER logo? It is NAVER’s special logo, which incorporates “a special moment of the day” to the NAVER logo. NAVER’s special logos have been welcoming users for over 15 years, with around 700 special logos shining a light on the special moment of each day.
Adding a joyful touch to the user’s day
NAVER started creating special logos to gift users with a bit of joy and excitement to users who visit NAVER several times a day. Starting with Christmas in 2008, different special logos were first created to showcase well-known days for celebration such as national and traditional holidays, then expanded the themes in hopes that users would discover and be inspired by more stories.
Under the name of “the beginnings project,” NAVER highlighted the days when something so familiar to us today was first created, such as “the birth of the WWW” and “the first appearance of the Geobukseon warship,” while displaying a special logo on users’ birthdays with the words “Happy Birthday!” to move users’ hearts. Whether a day is “a day that all users can easily relate to” is the most important criterion for selecting a theme for special logos. Rather than selecting days that sound cool or are known only by a select few, themes that everyone can look back on – such as the environment and history – are selected. In particular, NAVER always creates special logos for days like “Hangul Day,” “Arbor Day,” and “Earth Day” so that their values and impact can resonate with our users.
“Animated logos” that deliver even richer stories
NAVER’s special logos have continued to evolve for over 15 years. The biggest change it went through was the introduction of “animated special logos.” Animated motions were first applied to incorporate 16 different types of historically significant variations of Korea’s national flag into a single logo in celebration of the 64th Liberation Day. Since then, NAVER has been creating animated special logos that are familiar and relatable to a wide range of users to convey even richer stories behind the special day.
Do you remember the group of puppies that took over the NAVER main page in March 2023? When users clicked on the special logo for “National Puppy Day,” the puppies in the logo made their way onto the main page to take a stroll on users’ screens while making woofing sounds. As NAVER also presented a variety of content including a list of dog-friendly destinations, quizzes, and special shopping promotions for pets, the special logo was clicked over 3.4 million times on that day.
Adding more colors with around 200 creators
As more users started to look forward to NAVER’s special logos, NAVER started an art project in 2011 with renowned artists in order to deliver an even wider range of stories. Since then, NAVER has been working with around 200 creators to create special logos. Creators have the opportunity to introduce their works to a large number of people through NAVER’s main page, while users get to learn more about the special stories behind the day through even more creative means. More stories on special logos and the creators who come up with their own unique works can be found on NAVER Diary.
