For AI that will positively benefit our lives – NAVER’s AI Safety Policy presented at UN

On December 5 2024, NAVER participated in the “Towards a human rights-based approach to new and emerging technologies: From concept to implementation” event held at the UN Office in Geneva, Switzerland to showcase NAVER’s efforts in building a safe AI ecosystem.
NAVER’s five principles for “beneficial AI for humanity”
NAVER has created its technologies and services based on the belief that anyone should be able to easily use and safely access AI. NAVER sees AI as a tool that positively benefits the lives of users and has established its own AI policies early on. The first outcome of such efforts is the “NAVER AI Ethics Principles,” co-developed with the Seoul National University AI Policy Initiative in 2021.
NAVER AI Ethics Principles are ground rules all NAVER employees must respect when using and developing AI. The principle includes five actionable standards, which are: “Developing Human-centered AI,” “Respecting Diversity,” “Balancing Reasonable Explainability with Convenience,” “Accounting for Safety in Service Design,” and “Protecting Privacy and Data Security.”
A principle put into practice by seeping into every step of the service
At the UN event held in December this year, NAVER presented cases where AI Ethics Principles were consistently applied to NAVER’s services through close cooperation with service operators. The first case presented was on the “CHEC (Consultation on Human-centered AI’s Ethical Considerations)” – NAVER’s AI ethics consultation process that began in 2022.
CHEC is the process of applying NAVER’s AI Ethics Principles to actual services by evaluating AI ethics-related aspects in every step of planning a NAVER AI service – from the initial planning to after its launch – with those responsible for the job such as organizers, developers etc. Rather than unilaterally inspecting the service, it is about considering the impact the service has on society both internally and externally, communicating areas for improvement from a societal perspective, enhancing the service, and making the Ethics Principle more concrete through real cases.
“In order to put the AI Ethics Principles into practice, we have to consider the actual context, the service development and launch process, the user environment, etc., with service developers. AI Ethics Principles can be reduced to a cliché if we are not well aware of where they are applied to. That is why the NAVER AI Policy team makes consistent efforts to cooperate with experts from the outside, like the Seoul National University AI Policy Initiative, to be able to offer consultations that can be applied to the actual plans and development processes through the CHEC processes.”
Along with CHEC, “A Guide to CLOVA X for Humanity (2023)”, which was created by reflecting the NAVER AI Principles to respond to rapidly developing generative AI technologies, and AI Safety Framework (2024), built to systematically acknowledge and manage the potential threats posed by AI during developing and deploying AI systems, were presented.
NAVER leading efforts in making the global AI ecosystem safer
With the rapid evolution of AI technology, concerns over its ethical issues are also growing. With that said, as well as internalizing major AI technologies, NAVER is closely collaborating with service designers and developers to create a specific and realistic AI Safety Policy. Early this year, NAVER was a technological advisor to the UN in drafting the UN AI Safety Report, and contributed to the AI safety benchmark establishment project at “MLCommons,” a development consortium where big tech companies participate in, and is being acknowledged as a global leader in the field of AI safety.
Going forward, NAVER will lead global efforts in creating a safe and sustainable AI ecosystem by cooperating with service creators, scholars, and technology experts in Korea and elsewhere ●
