NAVER CEO Choi Soo-yeon and UK Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology Talk About AI After Exploring NAVER’s Advanced Technologies

As generative AI technology is garnering global attention, AI ethics and safety are also increasingly becoming the focus of social concern. NAVER is endeavoring to secure technological leadership to build safe AI by preemptively establishing the AI Ethnics Principles, as well as achieving outstanding results in the domain of AI safety research recently.
Michelle Donelan, the United Kingdom (UK) Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, visited NAVER before the “AI Seoul Summit,” and met with CEO Choi Soo-yeon and exchanged talks about NAVER’s strategies on AI ethics and change in the Korean AI industry. Below are the main Q&As of the conversation.
Q. Secretary Donelan l How is NAVER approaching AI safety?
A. CEO Choi l From an early stage, NAVER put thought into how AI would influence our society. In 2021, we established the AI Ethics Principles and have been leading the efforts to ensure global AI safety by operating a “Red Team” to enhance the safety of generative AI.
Q. Secretary Donelan l How do you see AI will change the Korean industry?
A. CEO Choi l Korea is a unique country where a local company is topping numerous lists in the tech domain, from a search engine to community, gaming, shopping, and messenger. Korea adopted AI technologies quicker than anyone, fostering active discussions on applications in various business sectors, through which I believe we will be able to prove Korea’s AI competitiveness soon.
Furthermore, as Korea’s leading AI company, NAVER has been contributing to Korea’s digital transformation by bridging AI technologies and various industries and plans to expand cooperation with other countries, including the UK, based on experiences so far.
After the talk, Secretary Donelan, who is leading the UK’s AI R&D and investment, explored NAVER’s headquarters 1784, the world’s first robot-friendly building, to experience firsthand the integration of cutting-edge technologies like robotics, autonomous driving, AI, cloud computing, digital twins, and 5G. Secretary Donelan also encouraged NAVER’s responsible approach as a leading AI technology company and remarked she would look forward to meeting in the UK soon.
NAVER currently runs an AI ethics advisory process “CHEC,” through which the company communicates with internal and external experts to provide safe AI technologies during the process of launching AI services. It also expects to publish “NAVER AI Safety Framework,” an AI safety action plan. With a sense of responsibility, NAVER will continuously stay committed to building a reliable AI ecosystem where users can enjoy a safe and convenient life through AI technologies ●
