NAVER Map officially introduces Street View 3D, based on spatial intelligence technology, supporting a more vivid exploration of locations and travel experiences in a 3D environment.
On the 16th, NAVER Corporation (CEO Choi Soo-yeon) announced that it will officially launch the “Street View 3D” service, which allows users to view building and business information in three dimensions within Street View, providing a more immersive location exploration experience.
NAVER Map’s “Street View 3D” is a service that implements a three-dimensional environment, letting users experience offline spatial perception almost as if they were seeing it with the naked eye. By incorporating diverse information from three-dimensional spaces into Street View, it provides a richer and more versatile service experience through a seamlessly connected panorama view compared to the existing 2D-based Street View.
Major commercial areas within Seoul have been prioritized for the application of the Street View 3D. It is currently available in multiple areas, such as Gangnam-gu, Mapo-gu, Songpa-gu, Yongsan-gu, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Jongno-gu, and Jung-gu, as well as Bundang-gu in Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do, with plans to gradually expand the target areas. In April, NAVER Map conducted a pilot application of Street View 3D in select areas in Seoul, such as Gangnam-gu and Bukchon in Jongno-gu, to test its technology and stability. Following enhancements to its features to improve user convenience, such as providing detailed guidance for locations, it has been officially released through this NAVER Map update.
Notably, Street View 3D enhances the traditional image-based version by delivering an immersive location exploration experience with comprehensive information. In the newly updated version, users can select buildings and stores displayed on the service screen to view detailed information.
Through Street View 3D, users can directly obtain detailed and three-dimensional information about businesses, and it is expected to be utilized for various new business opportunities on NAVER Map in the future. NAVER had previously unveiled predictive models utilizing Street View 3D during the DAN24 conference held at COEX last November. During the conference, NAVER unveiled the new Street View feature that displays restaurants’ signature menu items and discount coupons, hinting at the direction NAVER Map aims to take in enhancing its functionality through the utilization of Street View 3D.
Furthermore, various features have been added to the new Street View 3D to enhance user convenience. Based on the observation that users have primarily used Street View to locate building and parking lot entrances, these will now be marked separately and provided with more detailed guidance. In the PC version of Street View, selected buildings are highlighted with visual effects, making them distinct from surrounding structures for more intuitive viewing. It also provides more information on Street View, such as the list of stores located in the building, compared to the level of detail available on the map.
Additionally, various features enable more detailed offline location information, such as displaying directional information based on signboards and landmark data to help determine the direction at intersections, “Follow the Path,” which automatically plays the route on Street View as if users were following the road, and leading to detailed information when selecting information about businesses of interest to check additional details.
Street View 3D has been enhanced by integrating various technologies from NAVER LABS. A notable example is P1, the vehicle-based panoramic mapping system optimized for 3D information collection. P1, independently developed by NAVER LABS’s autonomous driving team, rapidly and thoroughly collects data from various sensors, including high-performance navigation sensors and light detection and ranging (LiDAR), and synchronizes it without errors. Subsequently, the accuracy of spatial and object positioning has been significantly improved compared to the existing Street View, by processing the data collected through its proprietary spatial intelligence technology. It has also become possible to implement different types of information in three dimensions, adding depth information.
Choi Seung-lak, Head of Division of NAVER Map services, stated, “The newly introduced Street View 3D is an advanced service designed to provide map information that is closer to reality, and it has the potential for further expansion in various directions in the future. For example, users will be able to check more diverse information that enhances convenience, such as popular menu items or discount coupons at specific stores, real-time congestion levels, and more, through Street View 3D. We plan for it to evolve into an even more immersive map service.”
