NAVER BAND has achieved the remarkable feat of surpassing 5 million monthly active users (MAU) in the United States as of October. The platform’s MAU has more than doubled since 2020, indicating substantial growth. NAVER aims to further boost its global presence by expanding BAND’s applications and introducing customized features to enhance user satisfaction in the United States, leveraging over two decades of experience operating various community services.
With a focus on the global market from its early stage, NAVER BAND surpasses 5 million MAU in North America within a decade, marking an extraordinary milestone
Building on the success of its key community platforms such as Knowledge iN, Blog, and Café, NAVER introduced its next-generation community service, “BAND,” in 2012. With the advent of smartphones and increasing mobile social media usage, BAND swiftly gained popularity as a mobile-optimized, group-based social media platform. Particularly in Korea, BAND solidified its position as a unique group-based social media platform, attracting around 18 million MAU by targeting “interest communities” and self-improvement trend among millennials and Gen Z with features like “Small Groups” and “Missions”.
However, NAVER aimed beyond domestic success and, just two years after its launch, established a local subsidiary in the United States in 2014, starting BAND’s full-fledged global market expansion. Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, BAND’s MAU in the United States has witnessed consistent growth, notably doubling since 2020. Achieving 5 million MAU in the United States, a nation known for pioneering global social media platforms, stands as an unprecedented achievement for a first-generation Korean social media service.
The success of BAND’s expansion in the US market can be largely attributed to its effectiveness in facilitating after-school activities. With a diverse culture of after-school programs, including sports, cheerleading, and dance, BAND has become an essential communication tool among students, parents, and coaches. Beyond this, BAND is widely utilized for managing classroom and academic activities in US elementary, middle, and high schools. As its user base continues to grow, the versatility of BAND extends into various sectors, such as religious groups, businesses, hobbies, family groups, scouts, and non-profit organizations.
BAND’s success strategy amid a competitive social media landscape is localization, targeting local culture and user characteristics
The appeal of BAND in the global social media arena lies in its profound understanding of local user preferences and its dedication to developing market-specific features. In Korea, BAND serves primarily as a social interaction tool, while in the United States, it has evolved into a premier platform for coordinating group activities, especially after-school programs. American users particularly appreciate BAND’s robust management features, including announcements, schedule coordination, and file sharing, showcasing a distinct preference for its effectiveness in group management.
Accordingly, NAVER has focused on localizing BAND in North America as a group management tool. Key features introduced for US users include the calendar and chaperone features. Aligning with the American practice of using calendars for invites and RSVPs, BAND enhanced its RSVP feature, allowing users to sign up not only for themselves but also for their companions. In addition, as BAND’s usage in American schools surged, the chaperone feature was introduced to oversee student activities, earning positive responses from parents.
Beyond enhancing user satisfaction through localization, BAND has actively encouraged users to recommend the platform, aiding in attracting new users. Collaborations with prominent US sports organizations have opened doors to new user groups. BAND’s active involvement in various US coaching and sports events and sharing of real user experiences has fueled its growth.
Kim Jookwan, head of NAVER Community CIC, remarked, “NAVER BAND’s global success is rooted in our two decades of experience managing extensive community services such as Blog, Café, and Knowledge iN. Moving forward, BAND will continue to leverage NAVER’s experience and technology, and captivate global users by optimizing for regional and cultural characteristics.”
