At the AI Seoul Summit on May 21, NAVER’s Founder & Global Investment Officer (GIO) Lee Haejin highlighted the need to develop responsible and diverse AI models that honor regional cultures and values as a key to enhancing AI safety in the AI era.
At the summit, Lee joined global leaders, international organizations, and leading AI company executives to delve deeper into these themes. He noted, “Unlike search engines where users can select information from multiple results using a single keyword, AI usually provides specific answers right away, reducing the range of options. This aspect significantly affects younger users, such as children and teenagers, and is a critical element in considerations of AI safety.”
“If a small number of AIs dominate the present, the perception of past history and culture will be limited to the answers of those AIs, which will have a great influence on the future,” he said. “From this perspective, we need to have many different AI models that represent different perspectives and understand the cultural and environmental context of each region.”
Lee used a quote from a novel, “Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past,” to illustrate the point that if a few AIs dominate the present, our perception of history and culture will be limited to the answers provided by those AI, which will have a great influence on the future. He explained that it is crucial to create a multitude of AI models that encapsulate diverse perspectives and grasp the cultural and environmental contexts of their areas.
He remarked, “History is viewed through various lenses. By promoting diverse AI models, we can preserve the unique cultural identities of nations, empowering young individuals to develop educated historical perspectives and comprehensive views."
He stated, “NAVER has been realizing technologies and services that enable connectivity to create greater values through diversity. In line with our AI Ethics Principles, we are set to unveil the NAVER AI Safety Framework, a more specific AI safety practice framework, next month.” He continued, “NAVER will continue to support, in one form or another, the development of responsible AI models that respect and understand the cultures and values of each region, so that countries around the world can have their own sovereign AI.”
The AI Seoul Summit, held from May 21 to 22, brought together world leaders, international organizations, and prominent AI technology companies for comprehensive discussions on advancing AI to foster innovation, encourage collaborative growth and enhance AI safety.
