NAVER CLOUD has partnered with Intel to establish a new AI chip ecosystem based on 'Gaudi' through joint research with domestic academia and startups. Details of this collaboration were unveiled during CEO Pat Gelsinger's keynote at 'Intel Vision 2024' in Phoenix, U.S. on the 8th, where the agreement between the two companies was signed.

Through the provision of IT infrastructure based on Gaudi, Intel's AI accelerator chip, NAVER CLOUD and Intel will support domestic startups and universities in conducting AI research. This collaboration will involve operating various software development and industry-academia research projects centered around Gaudi. Additionally, the two companies will establish the AI Joint Research Center (NICL: NAVER Cloud-Intel-Co-Lab), which will engage more than 20 domestic research labs and startups, including KAIST, Seoul National University, and POSTECH.
NAVER CLOUD emphasized that the AI resource environment for domestic startups and schools has become extremely challenging due to recent burdens related to purchasing AI chips. In response to this situation. NAVER CLOUD proposed a joint research approach to Intel to revitalize domestic AI research and strengthen the diversity of the AI chip ecosystem. Through this collaborations Intel will verify the performance of 'Gaudi' and secure the software, while NAVER CLOUD leads the research and expand the AI ecosystem centered on Hyper CLOVA X.
Kim Yu-won, CEO of NAVER CLOUD, explained the background of the collaboration and emphasized, "There are not many companies in the world that have developed and operated a hyperscale large language model (LLM) 'From Scratch' like NAVER CLOUD. Furthermore, NAVER CLOUD stands out globally as the sole company, apart from big tech companies in the US and China, capable not only of proposing optimization technology for efficient operation of high-cost LLMs but also of offering solutions for them.
“For the past 25 years, NAVER has been providing users with alternative choices in internet market, including search engine, cloud services, and generative AI, which are dominated by global big-tech companies. This diversity represents the one of the most important core values which NAVER has pursued.” added Kim. “In this context, securing the diversity in the AI ecosystem is very meaningful,” he emphasized.
