- Key officials stress that IT technologies are essential for enhancing national competitiveness

Key officials from five Pacific Islands, including ministers and vice ministers from Papua New Guinea and other countries, visited the world’s first robot-friendly building, NAVER 1784, on June 1.
Among the visitors were ▲Hon. Timothy Masiu, Papua New Guinea’s Minister for Communication & Information Technology; ▲Hon. Tingika Elikana, Cook Islands’ Associate Minister of Justice, Finance and Economic Management, and Foreign Affairs and Immigration; ▲Domingo Bauro Kabunare, the Republic of Kiribati’s Chief Information Security Officer for Ministry of Information, Communications & Transport; ▲Lefaoalii Unutoa Auelua-Fonoti, the Independent State of Samoa’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology; and ▲Andrew Toimoana, Tonga’s Director of the Digital Transformation Department under the Prime Minister’s Office.
The visit took place following the “2023 Korea–Pacific Islands Summit” held on May 29 to experience the technology of Korea’s leading internet platform company NAVER. The visitors experienced the advanced technologies of artificial intelligence (AI), robots, and digital twins incorporated into NAVER 1784. They agreed that securing information technology (IT) capabilities is crucial for enhancing national competitiveness. Chae Seon-ju, President of NAVER’s ESG and External Policy, Kang Sang-chul from NAVER LABS, and Jang Geun-chang from NAVER Cloud accompanied the visit.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), also visited NAVER 1784 on May 23. After witnessing various advanced technologies, the Director-General said, “Korea is a leader in the digital space. I visited NAVER – Korea’s Google equivalent – and discussed forward looking technologies including generative AI”. <END>
