NAVER Sports is stepping into a new community experiment where chat and discussion co-exist
September 27th, 2022
NAVER Sports officially launched services where sports fans can cheer for their team and have a chat together to start a full-scale next-generation community experiment.
Community services under the theme of “Sports” are available for anyone to participate in the following areas. ▲ “Open Talk” where one can chat in small groups by freely opening a chat room for each favorite team ▲ “Issue Talk” where anyone can pitch in various opinions and discuss major sports issues.

Any NAVER sports fan can open an “Open Talk” chat room where up to 1,000 people can enter, and can set settings to various sports, categories and keywords such as KBO League, Premier League, and V League, etc. “Open Talk” also provides the “Watch the game together” function, allowing users to enjoy games in real-time while cheering together with fans.
NAVER Sport’s next-generation community service uses open chat based on fields of interest, which significantly increases user participation while maintaining the expertise of “Sports”, a vertical service. In particular, the service is expected to greatly increase the immersion level in sports by sharing memorable scenes during the game with fans and quickly sharing the emotions of interesting and unfortunate moments.
NAVER has already successfully operated community platforms such as NAVER CAFE and BAND where users come together. NAVER plans to continue this momentum in “Sports” services where diverse fans can come together in a group as well. In addition to real-time voting and photo sharing, various functions will be introduced later with user opinions to enable real-time participation as well as continuous and steady communication based on users’ fields of interest.
Meanwhile, in NAVER Sports, about 1,000 “Open Talk” chat rooms were created about 5 days after the service opened last Thursday, September 22nd. ▲Premier League, KBO, and K-League, which are recently competing for their rankings ▲Volleyball and basketball, which are winter sports, and ▲Other diverse sports categories are being actively operated via chat rooms including trendy sports such as golf.
“Issue Talk” provides relevant content such as articles, videos, and data so that users can share various opinions on specific topics such as “Federer's retirement”, “700 home runs by Pujols”, and “Marathon world record”, etc. In addition, “Issue Talk” also introduced a voting function as well. Through these functions, various opinions on specific sports topics can be shared in-depth and meaningful discussions are also expected to take place.
Park Hyun-Jun, leader of NAVER Sports, and Uh Su-Jeong, PM of NAVER Sports, said, “We hope that the newly introduced community service will become a place for many fans who share the same interests to gather together and consume sports content in a new way. We will continue to make various attempts to run a healthy community where users can enjoy chatting, debating, etc. under the theme of ‘Sports.”
