LINE Manga and eBookJapan, both operated by LINE Digital Frontier, a Japanese affiliate of NAVER WEBTOON, sold more than 10 billion yen (97 billion KRW) of webtoons and e-books in August. This is the first time that the webtoon and e-book sales of the two companies have crossed the 10 billion yen mark.

Various promotional events run by LINE Manga in August and popular Korean webtoons have led to a surge in sales. Korean webtoons such as Marry My Husband (written by Sung Sojak, art by LICO), Viral Hit (written by Park Tae-joon, art by Kim Jung-hyun), and Teenage Mercenary (written by YC, art by Rakyeon), have been showing great performance, thereby driving sales up. The synergistic effect created by eBookJapan’s campaign, conducted in collaboration with PayPay, the leading payment platform in Japan, and the promotional event for title recommendation contributed to boosting webtoon and e-book sales in Japan.
NAVER WEBTOON will continue to establish itself as a popular digital comics platform in Japan through a synergistic effect brought about by LINE Manga and eBookJapan. LINE Digital Frontier completed its acquisition of eBook Initiative Japan in March and has recently established a task force for joint synergy in order to expand the business of LINE Manga and EbookJapan.
Mobile app-based LINE Manga and web-based eBookJapan will allow LINE Digital Frontier to cover both the app and web markets in expanding its content distribution network, all the while reinforcing the selection of original content available on the webtoon platform. Furthermore, the company will discover original content in Japan and talented local creators through “indies,” a system for discovering new talents in amateur creators.
“Both LINE Manga and eBookJapan are showing solid performances in their business turnover and the number of users,” said Kim Sin-bae, co-president of LINE Digital Frontier. “By creating a synergistic effect between the two platforms, we will continue to take the lead in establishing the ecosystem for digital comics in Japan with various creators and publishers.”
