NAVER Corporation (KRX: 035420) announced today that the company is enhancing its personalized search service AiRSearch by applying a multimodal artificial intelligence (AI) model. The company’s first application of this globally trending technology is its deep learning-based image search service, Smart Lens.
Multimodal AI is the key technology in the next-generation search experience as it studies complex information, including text and images simultaneously, to provide fast and effective search results for users. Unlike conventional search, where the service depends on a single method for text, image or voice, multimodal AI delivers more accurate and customized search results as it can combine images and text.
NAVER established OmniSearch, the company’s multimodal AI model, in March 2022. OmniSearch can deliver search results that match users’ search keywords by studying high-quality big data from various services within the NAVER ecosystem, including NAVER Blog, Café, Shopping, Knowledge iN and News, which are used by tens of millions of people. By integrating the model into its real-world service, NAVER has improved the service for users to experience advanced AI technology in everyday life.
To begin with, the company applied the model to Smart Lens, an AI-powered visual search service. Smart Lens enable a specialized search on various topics, such as shopping products, places, and even wine labels by shooting an image. The service is provided by Green Dot -an interactive search button- on the NAVER mobile app.
Multimodal AI-applied Smart Lens can now provide more specific and refined results by adding text through the ‘+Adding Search Word’ feature after shooting an image for search. For example, after searching a certain sneakers image, users can add more search words, such as colors, design or materials in order to narrow down the search results.
Currently, the multimodal AI-powered Smart Lens is applied to the search on sneakers, and NAVER will roll out the advanced search capability to more categories. The company also aims to further enhance its search capability by applying advanced OmniSearch throughout its search services, including shopping search this year. NAVER expects the application of its OmniSearch model, which is based on shopping-related big data, to enable more specialized search services in the shopping category.
“As multimodal AI becomes a trending topic globally, we launched NAVER’s multimodal AI model OmniSearch to our Smart Lens service to provide a new AI-based search experience for users,” said Kang Yoo-hoon, executive officer at NAVER Search CIC. “We will lead the AI application for everyone so that users can experience NAVER’s AI capabilities in their daily lives through various search services powered by advanced AI-powered AiRSearch.”
Last year, NAVER unveiled AiRSearch, an AI search brand that encompasses various AI recommendation technologies and searches for content, shopping and local locations. AiRSearch provides customized search results powered by NAVER’s AI Capability that reflect personal interests and trends. As a part of AiRSearch’s development, NAVER plans to establish a search environment where AI becomes a part of daily life as it rolls out its AI technology to the entire Search service.
On May 3, NAVER will host its annual NAVER Search Colloquium 2022 online to introduce its next-generation AI search. The company will share its latest research findings and technological trends with experts in academia and industry, and present about multimodal AI. At the annual event, NAVER will share its experience and insights gained from developing the OmniSearch model based on good quality data from the NAVER ecosystem and applying the model to its Search service.
