NAVER CLOVA, the artificial intelligence (AI) division of NAVER Corp. (KRX: 035420) presented the latest developments in its AI technology and their application at NVIDIA GTC, an annual global AI developer conference hosted by NVIDIA.
The virtual event, which ran from March 21-24, featured over 900 sessions delivered by 1,400 presenters, including industry leaders in AI, high-performance computing, and computer graphics.
NAVER CLOVA head, Chung Suk-geun (SG Chung) and Conversational AI team leader, Park Woo-myoung, took to the stage and spoke about AI transformation using hyperscale AI technology, and the scalability of AI through world-class infrastructure to optimize bottom-line impact.
Mr. Chung’s session was selected as one of the key sessions to watch at this year’s GTC, the only session by a Korean company amongst the conference’s featured sessions. NAVER CLOVA’s presentations also included case studies on the applications of NAVER CLOVA’s AI capabilities to solve real-world problems.
HyperCLOVA heralds a new paradigm in AI offerings
NAVER CLOVA’s AI technologies are capable of addressing real-life problems and their potential has been proven through the application of HyperCLOVA to NAVER’s various solutions and services. These include the company’s namesake search engine as well as other offerings such as its e-commerce platform and more, which are used daily by many Koreans.
HyperCLOVA is NAVER CLOVA’s proprietary hyperscale AI model, the first of its kind in Korea. It was trained using over 560 billion tokens of Korean data and user-generated content (UGC) from the NAVER platform, and is powered by a supercomputer with a capacity of 700 petaflops (PF) that has been in operation since October 2020 to accelerate the AI model’s development. NVIDIA CEO, Jensen Huang mentioned that NAVER was one of the early adopters of NVIDIA’s large language model (LLM) training framework, which has accelerated innovations in the field of computing.
NAVER aims to create predictable and scalable AI technology with HyperCLOVA and democratize its AI capabilites to empower everyone. Existing AI models require optimized data and annotation for certain problems or services, and there are limits when tackling more than one problem. With HyperCLOVA’s common intelligence model, NAVER CLOVA is ushering in a new era where a single AI model can be applied to many different issues and tasks simultaneosly.
Launching services by applying hyperscale AI
NAVER is leading the implementation of AI in real-world services and products. Its unmatched capabilities include an AI-powered merchandizing service, CLOVA MD, which helps businesses by supporting promotional and marketing activities. HyperCLOVA also helps identify consumer trends to automatically curate products for seasonal promotional events, correct search-optimized product names to make them easier for customers to understand. The CLOVA MD service currently generates over 90% of marketing slogans for seasonal promotional events on NAVER Shopping.
When choosing messages for digital gift cards, HyperCLOVA can generate sample messages to provide the sender with inspiration, if provided with information such as the occasion, the relationship with the recipient and the type of product.
Most notably, HyperCLOVA has been used to alleviate burdens on welfare systems. CLOVA CareCall for seniors, a conversational call agent, was launched in Korea to lend a helping hand to government organizations suffering from manpower shortages. The AI-powered welfare call service is not only capable of natural and contextual conversation, but can also empathize with elderly users by creating a personalized call experience, enabled by HyperCLOVA.
NAVER CLOVA to transform businesses by democratizing AI technology
NAVER CLOVA aims to become a global AI transformation enabler for everyone from small businesses and creators to third-party developers, by providing easy-to-use ‘AI to empower everyone.’
For example, chatbots are great for customer service but creating them is not an easy task. NAVER’s live chat service uses HyperCLOVA to automatically create chatbots based on existing customer service logs of e-commerce sellers. It analyzes customer inquiries to generate appropriate responses and create FAQs, allowing entrepreneurs to swiftly respond to their customers in easier and more convenient way.
It can be also challenging for small and medium-sized enterprises(SMEs) to decide what messages or content to post. HyperCLOVA can provide multiple suggestions for titles and messages to help SMEs create their own postings.
Users can also develop their own AI tools using CLOVA Studio, a no-code AI platform that can integrate with multiple AI solutions into a single AI platform. At the same time, it can run a tuning environment which can seek optimization using the specific information of a company. Through the NAVER Cloud Platform, companies can use NAVER CLOVA’s Hyperscale AI model, its optimized infrastructure and CLOVA Studio as a foundation for operations, and utilize their own data for customer service, business optimization and recommendations.
