NAVER LABS has launched ‘NAVER LABS Open Dataset’, a webpage that offers access to a collection of various datasets to nurture and accelerate the growth of Korea’s domestic technology sector. ‘NAVER LABS Open Dataset’ features all datasets previously released by NAVER LABS and will continuously be updated with new datasets. The NAVER LABS Open Dataset page, which was launched on May 19, contains high-definition maps (HD maps) and large-scale indoor/outdoor localization datasets that can be used in the areas of autonomous vehicles, mobile robots, augmented reality (AR), and extended reality (XR). Anyone, including academic institutions and startups interested in these fields, can request the datasets needed, for use in research and development.
Cutting-Edge Data Resources from the World’s Largest AI Research Institute
These datasets were generated using the unique, proprietary technology of NAVER LABS and NAVER LABS Europe—the world's largest Artificial Intelligence (AI) research institute located in Grenoble, France. The datasets feature high-precision outdoor HD maps of Magok, Pangyo, Sangam, and Yeouido developed with NAVER LABS’s Hybrid HD Mapping technology which uses aerial images and artificial intelligence, and 3D LiDAR point cloud data scanned through the mobile mapping system, R1.
NAVER LABS’s newly-released indoor localization datasets are the world’s largest high-precision data for visual localization in crowded public spaces. Images in the datasets are captured in large-scale public spaces and realistic conditions, providing an immensely detailed combination of static scenes and moving objects in various everyday spaces such as department stores, shopping complexes, and subway stations. The datasets were constructed using NAVER LABS’ technology, such as M1X (indoor 3D/HD mapping robot), and COMET (backpack-type mobile mapping system). Both M1X and COMET can also be used in research fields such as mobile robots, AR and XR.
NAVER LABS has a history of sharing its research with academic and research institutes. In 2017, it opened up the patent and design of AIRCART—an electronic cart that incorporates wearable robot technology to enhance physical movement by increasing strength and endurance for third-party use. In 2018, it co-developed the curriculum for major courses at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). NAVER LABS was also the first Korean company to release open-source HD maps for autonomous driving in 2019 and held research challenges to improve localization technologies in 2020.
“As the datasets we are sharing require large-scale investment and significant time, we hope it will further accelerate the research of various domestic research institutes and startups," said Sangok Seok, CEO of NAVER LABS. “While further advancing the globally recognized capabilities of NAVER LABS, we will continue to share datasets built with our technologies to contribute to the further growth of domestic academic and research communities.”
