NAVER Cloud announced today that the company has successfully deployed the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA)’s COVID-19 Vaccination Sign-Up system on its cloud infrastructure, providing a quick, secure user registration, demonstrating a successful private-public collaboration.
NAVER Cloud is the only Korean cloud service provider (CSP) that contributed cloud infrastructure for vaccination sign-up for people between the ages of 18 and 49, an age group that became eligible for the COVID-19 vaccination on August 9.
The company deployed the system’s launch, user authentication, and queuing pages on the NAVER Cloud Platform. Since deployment, access to the site has been quick and reliable, ensuring that a total of 3.1 million people, and an average of 1.55 million people per day, can easily sign up by August 10. It also ensured both stability and security for the system by providing real-time monitoring, system failure prevention, and information protection on the public service.
A previous KDCA vaccination sign-up page experienced several disruptions on the server and network, suggesting an opportunity for improvement. NAVER Cloud was confirmed as the CSP to stabilize the system after discussions on private-public collaboration between the office of President Moon Jae-in, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS), and the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT). NAVER Cloud developed the cloud features by early August, conducting function and load tests as well as a third integrated test to validate the system’s stability and security.
NAVER Cloud’s selection from among domestic and global CSPs can largely be attributed to its experience handling the vaccination sign-up in July and its operation of the server for a public online education platform, launched in 2020 due to COVID-19. Upon KCDA’s request, more than 50 NAVER Cloud and NAVER personnel were urgently deployed to support vaccination sign-up for 3.9 million people aged between 50 and 54, from July 19 to 24.
The vaccination sign-up launch page on NAVER Cloud platform’s CDN+ provided stable service delivery, even during large-scale traffic surges in the initial hours. CDN+ is a technology that efficiently manages traffic through data distribution, combined with the advantages of cloud computing, based on NAVER Cloud’s proven technology. NAVER Cloud also deployed cloud-based servers, such as WEB and WAS (Web Application Server), to ensure sufficient capacity for efficient amplification, according to the situation and secured an auto-scaling function to add flexibility to scale down when larger capacities were no longer required.
Both NAVER Cloud and NAVER focused specifically on developing the system to allow users to access all services from authentication to queuing seamlessly. Both companies improved the system through the replacement of the former authentication page to the establishment of a full scenario of system usage. Then, they reviewed the whole process through rapid, systematic collaboration with government agencies, organizations, and developers. The ‘Netfunnel’ system, a mass-access control solution, which was originally operated by a third party, was smoothly transferred to the NAVER Cloud platform.
NAVER Cloud applied a defense system to detect and monitor DDoS attacks and invasion attempts targeting workloads on the cloud. It also implemented Anti-DDoS (DDos attack prevention service) and IDS (Intrusion Detection System) by pre-checking the weak points of the vaccine sign-up page and authentication process. In addition, NAVER Cloud’s security staff monitors the system 24/7 to provide timely support.
It was NAVER Cloud’s accumulated experience and know-how in cloud infrastructure and online system operation since the pandemic that enabled stable technical support, such as infrastructure operation and expansion. The company has been providing cloud infrastructure to operate remote class platforms, such as Cyber Learning System and EBS Online Class, a Korean public educational broadcaster, for two years, facilitating online classes from elementary school to high school. Recognized for its achievements in the industry, NAVER Cloud has extended its contracts with Korea Education Research Information Service (KERIS) through 2022 to provide cloud platform services. The company will continue to provide cloud service to EBS as well, contributing to its seamless education service for the next three years.
